IMPORTANT: Please do not use this database as a substitute for your own investigation of journals. Be sure to visit their websites, read their complete guidelines, and find as many samples as you can before you send off your poetry. We note as much important information as possible, but there can always be (and usually is) more, and of course data changes quickly. This site does not aim to instruct you in proper submission etiquette, but if our experiences as editors of various journals is any indicator, some of you really ought to study it more.
Notes
- In the main index, click on the name of the journal to see its full listing, and click on the field headings to order the journals using each field.
- Data is gathered from a wide array of sources, including the publication websites, book listings, and other online resources/databases.
- "Rating" is based on Jeffery Bahr's idea of a logarithmic scale attempting to objectively reflect the difficulty and "prestige" of getting poetry into a certain publication. It is not in any way a subjective comment on the quality of the poetry in the journal. The scale runs from 1 to 9--with proper distribution, there should be many 1's and very few 9's.
- "Poets Published" is an attempt to list a few representative poets published by the journal--frequency of publication in the journal increases the chances of being listed, as does mention in a resource such as Poet's Market.
- "Actual Response Time" is only an average, not a complete range of possible response times, and is based on a sample size of at least 5 submissions. If you want to increase the sample size, please visit Duotrope.
