AWP

As I mentioned here in passing some time back, I'm traveling to AWP for the first time this year (it'll also be my first time in New York City). So I have to ask, in order not to be so overwhelmed:

Who all is going?
What panels look interesting this year?
What offsite events are scheduled?
What general recommendations would AWP veterans make about how to go about things?
What questions should I be asking here that I can't think of to ask?

Looking forward to seeing/meeting people there...

Comments:
My only suggestion is book a room ASAP, if you haven't done so already.

I'm going.

My suggestion is to just relax. Most people get so stressed about seeing panels and readings that they forget to have fun. I know that sounds stupid, but it's true! I plan on just paging through the 'program' (which is actually a 300 page book you get when you register) and marking the things I absolutely can't miss (like Russell Edson's reading and Simic's panel, etc). There's going to be SOOOO much stuff both on-site and off-site this year because it's in NYC that it'll be impossible to see everything.

And beware of trying to see/talk to everyone you want to... it's also impossible.

That said, I hope I run into you... let's get a beer.

Friday night -- No Tell Books/Coconut Books/Bloof Books event at Stain Bar -- it won't be yet another reading marathon -- it's gonna be a production!

I hate most of the panels and never go to more than one a day.

Leave plenty of room in your luggage for bringing home books. Scope the book fair table early and grab what you have to, but otherwise wait until the last day to really get some deals. Exhibitors will clearance out books rather than have to pack them up again.

Oh yes, my hotel room is arranged. Good thing, too. Looking forward to trying out the other advice...

I'll be there. It's all about the Russell Edson tribute for me this year...and 9L-reppin'.

The big questions this year, at least for a few of us, is "can you get home to wherever you live in time to watch the Superbowl?" I can't, so I'm in NY until Monday.

Also, get yourself a weekend-pass metrocard.

And Reb's plugged the big off-campus event I'm dying for.

See you there!

Hey Steven, I'm going too! I'll have a table for Terrain.org, plus am heading up a panel titled "The Future of Environmental Essay," on Saturday at noon.

And the Terrain.org 10th Anniversary reading (featuring poetry, fiction, and nonfiction - 13 readers with 8 minutes each!) is on Thursday evening, 6-8 p.m., at Cornelia Street Cafe in the Village. Be there!

Well, the hottest on-site reception is definitely going to be the NEOMFA one on Saturday night. Michael Dumanis and I are going to make damn sure of it.

I'll be at the BOR/Akron Series in Poetry table for much of the conference, but usually I pick out a few panels I want to go to. Arrive early if it's something that will be popular. Make use of the free water that's everywhere.

Consider checking out local delis rather than buying food at the conference (though I usually just survive on those $10 sandwiches). You can get some bread and nice salads for much less, especially in NYC.

I'd normally put something in here about versatile wardrobe pieces and bringing at least five pairs of shoes, but I'm sure you already know that.

Looking forward to meeting you!

Sarabande/Switchback/Red Hen/Red Morning reading Friday night, 7:00, 11th St Bar.

All the cool kids will be there! Well, except for the ones at No Tell's reading, dammit ;)

Anyway, hope to see you around in NYC!
