13 Journals with Great Names

If you have "Quarterly" or "Review" in your title, it's a lot harder to get on this list. So sorry, Alaska Quarterly Review, but while I like your content, the name is a no-go (well, the Alaska part is nice). I do have to like the content to put a journal on this list, though. The list is in no particular order, except for #1.

1. Forklift, Ohio: A Journal of Poetry, Cooking, & Light Industrial Safety
2. Fine Madness
3. Crazyhorse
4. Shit Creek Review
5. Natural Bridge
6. Many Mountains Moving
7. Spork
8. The Dark Horse
9. The Bitter Oleander
10. Puerto del Sol
11. Unpleasant Event Schedule
12. Snow Monkey
13. Pleiades

There were a lot of honorable mentions on this list. What are some of your favorite journal names?

Labels: ,

Comments:
All-time strangest name: Great Circumpolar Bear Cult.

I'm rather fond of Unloved Mail-Order Bride, myself. But, um, I would be.

32 poems, of course!

Alimentum and Water-Stair are names (and journals) I like, too. And then of course Terrain.org: A Journal of the Built & Natural Environments (though I admit the .org is a bit klunky...).

Bat City Review
Golden Handcuffs Review
Thema (sounds like a theme superhero)

Forklift, Ohio, etc. is definitely on my list. Among my other favorite names (some are no longer publishing, in some cases stopped publishing years ago):

1. Tangerine Orangutan Marmalade Express
2. The Imploding Tie-Dyed Toupee
3. Ant Ant Ant Ant Ant
4. The Unforgettable Fire
5. Arsenic Lobster
6. American Goat
7. Bellowing Ark
8. Ophelia's Pale Lilies
9. Skanky Possum
10. Insects Are People Too
11. Experimental Forest
12. The Bad Henry Review
13. Kumquat Meringue

** I've list the above magazines based purely on their names, without consideration of content. In several cases (not all), I've never even seen a copy of the magazine, I've just seen the name listed in one of the standard literary magazine directories or in the acknowledgements page in someone's book.

Those are all indeed great names...

I'm partial to the name of the lit mag that gave me my first publication: Spinning Jenny. Love the image behind, the history in, and the danger within all its moving parts.

Steve, you have gone down in the Annals as the Primum Mobile of The Shit Creek Review, which you engendered with this comment:

"He should submit simultaneously. If his work reminds you positively of work you've seen in some journals, tell him to send work to those. If he's willing to accept rejection, have him shoot high at first--better than starting out with the Shit Creek Review, where publication is barely better than nothing.

Steve"

SCR will always honour you as its Onlie Begetter.
