Request for assistance/assistants

I'm working on a big online poetry project. Actually, right now my awesome programming friend Rich Miller is doing most of the work on a big project for me--it's a sortable, searchable database of literary journals. Well, it's not searchable yet, but it will be. Also, I've only added five journals so far, but I expect that will expand quickly.

I'm asking for help because I'd like some of my readers to sign up as users (actually "assistant administrators," since users can't really do anything yet) and do three things: (1) help beta test the database so we can make sure it's all working well, (2) suggest new functionality/categories or just identify glaringly obvious gaps I haven't figured out yet, and (3) add new journals to the database, which once the programming is done will be the time-consuming part. So if anyone's interested and has some time to add/edit journals and poke around in the database seeing how it looks and works, go that link above, register for an account, and then let me know by e-mail or comment.

Thanks in advance to anyone who's interested. I think this could be a fun and valuable project, insofar as anything to do with poetry is fun or valuable, ha ha.

Comments:
Steve, what a great project... and extremely helpful for those who can't afford a Poet's Market every year... needless to say, I've registered...

Stephen, if you want a database and front end website for literary magazines - with searches and space for commentaries and reviews - then I'd be more than happy to hand over the Clot database and coding to you and your mates. The database currently holds details of around 120 poetry journals/magazines with an online presence, though the data itself is for the most part around 3 years old and in need of urgent updating. And when I run a user's questionnaire most people found the website both useful and simple to use.

I took Clot offline about a month ago mainly because I realised I couldn't maintain it to the standards I wanted it to be maintained to, and having 3 year old information hosted on my website was embarrasing to me. But like I said if you want the database and webcoding to use or plunder then feel free to let me know and I'll zip it up and send it across.

ps the setup runs on php coded webpages and a MySQL database. You can find the remnants of the site at www.kalieda.org/newclot

I've registered, though I can't guarantee how much time I'll have in the next few days.

I love poetry projects.

Wheee!!! Fun...I've registered - just let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

maybe the folks at duotrope can help?

You might find this web site helpful for your project: http://www.newpages.com/npguides/litmags.htm#A

Nate, Lo, and Julie: thanks--I'll send you some information when I have time later today.

Rik: sure, I'll take a look at what you have if you want to send it to me. I don't know anything about PHP or MySQL beyond the names, but my friend does.

Jilly: thanks, I didn't know about that database--it looks great. Of course, mine will have some information that theirs doesn't. :-)

Gerald: yeah, NewPages is a nice resource.

Nate posted a link to this project -- it's a great idea! I've been passing on tidbits about journals (response times, genre, etc.) in my blog... but it's neither searchable nor sortable. I'd love to help... this is a dream site for me -- better than Poet's Market (which is often late in updates anyway).

Steve,

I registered and would be glad to do any work on the project.

Yours,

jln

Talk to Jeff Bahr. He already has a submission database with a very large list of mags, how many poems, etc.

Arlene & Jeff: thanks for signing up. I'll send you an e-mail soon.

C. Dale: yes, I use Jeffery's database often. Sadly, the online version isn't sortable, and I feel bad when I bug him to add a journal to it. ;-)
